Steven Shapiro offered this for a headline as the longtime national legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union prepares to step down: “Supreme Court Litigator Retires Undefeated!”
Shapiro’s two wins in the Supreme Court—yes, he’s 2-0—are bookends to his ACLU career. This fall, Shapiro leave the post he has held since 1993 and the organization for which he has worked since 1987. He directed a large docket of cases that ranged from free speech to gay rights to the death penalty.
