E. Barrett Prettyman Jr., who died at the age of 91 on Nov. 4, knew pretty much all there was to know about the Supreme Court and the lawyers who argued before it.
So when he called me in January 2005 with a story idea, I listened. “You really need to write about John Roberts Jr.,” Prettyman said. “He is going to be the next Supreme Court justice.”
