American Civil Liberties Union lawyer Ahilan Arulanantham won a MacArthur Foundation “genius” grant in September. But he confesses “I really haven’t had a chance” to think much about the honor and what he will do with the $625,000 no-strings stipend that goes with it.

Arulanantham has been a little busy. When he learned of the award, he was already deeply immersed in preparing for a U.S. Supreme Court oral argument. He will step to the lectern Nov. 30 to represent Alejandro Rodriguez and others awaiting deportation in Jennings v. Rodriguez, an important test of immigrants’ rights.
