The House has killed a bill that would have changed litigation between property owners and insurance companies that failed to pay claims fully or promptly. But some opponents warn that Sen. Larry Taylor, R-Friendswood, intends to revive some of the dead Senate Bill 1628′s provisions as amendments to another bill.

Taylor is the Senate sponsor for HB 3787, by Rep. Greg Bonnen, R-Friendswood. The bill would allow a property insurance company to issue a policy that set a new statute of limitations for filing a lawsuit. As long as the insurer gave the right notice of accepting or rejecting a claim, a property owner would have to sue the insurer within two years. Otherwise, the property owner would have three years to sue. The bill also allows an insurer to issue a policy that would require a property owner to file a property insurance claim within two years of finding damage.
