A Catholic hospital system changed its policy on providing health insurance to employees' same-sex spouses after one employee alleged sex discrimination because the hospital denied benefits to his husband.

Starting on Sept. 14, CHRISTUS Health will allow employees to enroll their same-sex spouses in health insurance during a monthlong special enrollment period.

“From our position, this is a huge deal. We think this is the very first faith-based employer in the country, at least that we are aware of, that has changed their policy after receipt of legal action,” said Austin solo Austin Kaplan, who represents the employee.
