The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit has ordered Texas to pay nearly $600,000 in attorney fees to Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld lawyers who defeated the state’s same-sex marriage ban nearly a year ahead of the U.S. Supreme Court’s historic Obergefell v. Hodges decision.

The firm took, on a pro bono basis, the cases of Cleopatra De Leon and Nicole Dimetman, who wanted their out-of-state marriage license recognized in Texas, and Victor Holmes and Mark Phariss, who were denied a Texas marriage license.
