Five large Texas firms are among the nation's highest-grossing firms and once again ranked on the recently published annual Am Law 100 list.

Four of the five Texas firms ended up with a rank in 2017 that came close to their spot on the Am Law 100 from last year, which looked at 2015 financials. However, Baker Botts, which posted robust 2016 financials due to some big contingency fees and strategic investments, made a significant move upward. The Houston–based firm came in 39th on the list, up from 46th the year before. The firm's revenue improved by 20.2 percent in 2016 compared with 2015, and profits per partner were up 36.6 percent.

Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, which had gross revenue of $980 million in 2016, was 29th on the Am Law 100 2017 ranking—the same spot it occupied in last year's version of the Am Law 100. Baker Botts was next in the 39th spot, while Houston's Vinson & Elkins, which had its best year ever with $654 million in gross revenue, was 53rd on the list—up from No. 55 the year before. Locke Lord, based in Dallas, was 60th, with $559 million in revenue, down from the 57th spot the year before, and Haynes and Boone of Dallas came in at 90th, with $375 million in revenue, down one slot from the previous year.
