Texas' new so-called sanctuary city law has prompted the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) to pull its 2018 convention from Grapevine, Texas, and move it to another state.

Senate Bill 4, which Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law May 7, prohibits local governments from adopting or enforcing local laws that prohibit or limit enforcement of immigration laws. It goes into effect Sept. 1.

Anastasia Tonello, an immigration lawyer in New York who is first vice president of the AILA, said the organization's board of directors voted last week to move the annual meeting to somewhere besides its planned venue of Grapevine, located in north Texas between Fort Worth and Dallas. She said the AILA had been monitoring progress of SB 4, and once it passed and the governor signed it into law, members expressed concern about going to Texas.
