Douglas Atnipp, who has been co-managing shareholder of Greenberg Traurig in Houston since he helped launch the office there in 2005, has moved to Winston & Strawn.
Atnipp, who was also co-chair of the energy practice group at Greenberg Traurig and the firm's co-regional operating shareholder for Texas for the last several years, joined Winston & Strawn's transactions department in Houston on Jan. 10.
“Doug is one of the best energy lawyers in Houston. He enhances our ability to provide best-in-class services in the energy industry,” said Chris Ferazzi, a corporate partner in the firm's Houston office.
Atnipp said he moved to Winston & Strawn because of its commitment to Texas, Houston and the energy practice.
“I got to a point where I determined that Winston's focus on Texas and growing the energy practice was more focused and sincere than Greenberg's,” he said, adding that he made that determination last summer but talked to some other firms to make sure it would be the right move for him.
Atnipp, who does energy transactions and advises clients on general corporate and finance transactions, said he brought along clients in the move, including Macquarie Bank, Atlas Sand Co. and S&B Engineers and Constructors Ltd..
“It was a big move for me and not an easy one. Greenberg is a great firm. I was responsible for hiring almost every person in the Houston office and involved in hiring people in the other offices, so it was a big decision for me and one that I did not take lightly,” he said.
Atnipp said he has worked with several lawyers in Winston & Strawn's Houston office, including Ferazzi and Richard Wynne. They formerly practiced together at Porter Hedges in Houston.
In a written statement, Richard Rosenbaum, executive chairman of Greenberg Traurig, said he hopes to continue his friendship with Atnipp and he understands “it was time for a change.” Rosenbaum said the firm remains in exceptionally good hands with its Texas leadership team.
Greenberg's co-regional operating shareholders—Mary-Olga Lovett in Houston, and Demetrius McDaniel in Austin—noted that the firm has more than 100 lawyers in offices in Houston, Austin and Dallas, and said Greenberg is committed to continued growth in the region by attracting top-tier practitioners.
