In the latest Houston lateral move involving energy lawyers, Winston & Strawn continued its Texas expansion by poaching litigation partners Hugh Tanner and Denise Scofield from Morgan, Lewis & Bockius.
At Morgan Lewis, Tanner had been managing partner of the Houston office and chair of the firm's oil and gas litigation group initiative.
“It made all the sense in the world” to move to Winston & Strawn, Tanner said, noting the firm's international roster of offices and its commitment to building a full-service office in Texas.
“Texas is a priority to Winston and that is important to us,” Scofield said.
The hiring of the two energy partners in Houston comes two weeks after Winston & Strawn hired eight energy and infrastructure lawyers from Norton Rose Fulbright, including of counsel Brenda Hanzl in Houston. It also follows Winston & Strawn's January hiring of Douglas Atnipp, Greenberg Traurig's co-managing partner in Houston.
John Keville, managing partner of Winston & Strawn's Houston office, said Tanner and Scofield bring “terrific knowledge and talent” to the office. “Their practice strengthens our existing oil and gas industry experience in Houston, as well as our overall market position in Texas,” he said.
Tanner and Scofield officially joined Winston & Strawn on Thursday.
Scofield said she and Tanner have worked together since he joined Morgan Lewis in Houston more than 10 years ago. Tanner said they weren't looking to leave Morgan Lewis, but could not pass up the opportunity to join Winston & Strawn because of how the firm fits their practice.
Tanner said the pair do litigation for Schlumberger and its family of companies, and manage Schlumberger litigation in North America. Tanner led the Morgan Lewis team that won a federal court dismissal in 2013 for a subsidiary of Schlumberger Ltd. in environmental litigation stemming from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion.
A spokeswoman at Morgan Lewis said in a statement that the firm is pleased with the growth of its Houston office over the past year. “We wish those two former partners well,” she said.
Winston & Strawn opened its Houston office in 2011 and launched its Dallas office a year ago with 21 lateral partners from eight firms.
