Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has asked Attorney General Ken Paxton for an opinion on whether state law covering emergency powers allows the governor to “suspend relevant state election laws and order an emergency special election.”

Abbott said in a letter to the AG that he needs to call a special election “as soon as is legally possible” to replace U.S. Rep. Blake Farenthold, R-Corpus Christi, who has resigned his position representing the 27th congressional district amid scandal.
