Cynthia Figueroa, a Plano attorney and former Dallas County clerk, will be among applicants for the State Bar of Texas president-elect to be interviewed Aug. 29 by the bar's Nominations and Elections Subcommittee.

Figueroa, who manages The Figueroa Law Group, will join five other president-elect applicants whom the bar disclosed earlier will be interviewed by the subcommittee.

A 1990 graduate of Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law, Figueroa served one term as county clerk of Dallas County beginning in January 2003. While the county clerk, she ushered in e-filing in Dallas County.

After leaving office at the end of 2006, Figueroa returned to her law practice, where she currently focuses on business law, government law, municipal finance and education.

Figueroa said she wants the lawyers of Texas to be “well represented” and “wants there to be transparency at the State Bar as there is in other agencies.”

Among other goals, Figueroa said, she will be looking out for the young lawyers coming out of law school strapped with significant debt. She said she would like the State Bar to brainstorm on how to help those lawyers.

“That is a huge problem for lawyers and the citizens of Texas,” she said. “What are we going to do if we burden lawyers with huge debt they can't pay?”
