Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld is the highest-ranking Texas firm among 102 large law firms nationally included in The American Lawyer's most recent Midlevel Associates Survey.

High scores from third-, fourth- and fifth-year associates at Akin Gump propelled the 858-lawyer firm into seventh place on the annual ranking, down one spot from last year. Vinson & Elkins was not far behind, taking the 18th spot on the list, improving from 41st in 2017.

Three other Texas-based firms are represented in the survey: Thompson & Knight (No. 46); Haynes and Boone (No. 79); and Bracewell (No. 99).

The Midlevel Associates Survey is based on responses from 5,270 midlevel associates at 102 firms in the Am Law 100, Am Law Second Hundred and Global 100. The survey asks midlevel associates to score their firms in a number of metrics, including job satisfaction, compensation and benefits, relations with partners and other associates, guidance, training, a firm's policy on billable hours, and management's openness about firm strategy and the potential to make partnership. Firms with 10 or more responses are included in the rankings.

Schulte Roth & Zabel, which has offices in New York, Washington, D.C., and London, took the top spot in The American Lawyer's survey.

When sorting results for individual cities in Texas, Akin Gump was ranked the highest among all firms in Dallas, with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher coming in second and Alston & Bird in third. The Dallas ranking included nine firms where at least five midlevel associates responded to The American Lawyer's survey.

In Houston, Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe took the top spot, followed by Holland & Knight and Morgan, Lewis & Bockius. An even dozen firms with offices in Houston were included in the city-specific ranking.
