What drew you to a career in law?
I enjoy being an advocate. I worked full time as a CPA at Deloitte in the International Tax group while attending SMU law school in the evening. At Deloitte, I saw that clients needed help protecting and promoting their business in ways beyond having a good accountant. As a lawyer, I find it satisfying to help clients with challenges and opportunities in their business.
Have you set a specific goal that you want to achieve in the next year?
In addition to my business and professional goals, a specific goal I have for next year is to build on the upcoming S.H.E. Summit, a woman's empowerment event, by helping plan and prepare for the next annual summit. I am part of the committee bringing the summit to Dallas for the first time.
What has been your proudest career moment and your biggest hurdle?
My proudest career moment so far was making partner in 2017. My biggest hurdle is finding the time to do everything I want to do. I have two young daughters, who are a priority for my husband and me. In addition to building business for my law firm, I am also involved in events through Leadership Dallas and the bar associations in which I am an active supporter.
Where do you fit on a 1-10 work-life balance scale with 10 being nirvana? Please explain.
Munck Wilson Mandala encourages us to maintain a healthy home life. It is an important part of our firm culture. We have many new parents with young children like me. The firm's leadership encourages us to spend time with our families, take vacations, and stay engaged with the things besides work that matter in life. This, combined with a strong support system at home, gives me a work-life balance that I rate at an 8.
What is the top quality that you've used to succeed in the profession?
Staying organized and keeping the lines of communication open with my clients. I have clients in China and other countries in different time zones. Clients appreciate accessibility and responsiveness.
Who is your favorite mentor and why?
Jamil Alibhai, Chair of Munck Wilson Mandala's Complex Litigation/Dispute Resolution Group. I started in the corporate section at the firm, but a month in, I knew that I wanted to switch to litigation. Jamil has taught me a lot since that time. He taught me, and continues to guide me on, how to be a better lawyer, and supports me in my community and work-related activities.
What's the best advice anyone has ever given you?
Always be curious. Stay informed and be willing to talk to strangers and meet new people from all walks of life. You never know what you'll learn or who you'll meet.
What trends are you observing in the profession that you're excited about?
Businesses love Dallas, and the growth here is exciting. More people are speaking up about equal opportunity and pay, and more companies and influencers are focusing on diversity and inclusion.
What is the greatest challenge you see for the legal profession?
The legal profession will need to adapt to the changing business environment just as other industries have. Younger clients, dynamic workforces, and new technologies and industries are changing the way that law firms provide value to clients. It's exciting for us because our firm likes challenge and change, and we have a lot of younger attorneys who are bringing fresh ideas and perspective to the table.
