Brian Cassidy, managing partner of Locke Lord's Austin office, received the Community Service Award from the Real Estate Council of Austin at RECA's 2018 annual awards luncheon and membership meeting Dec. 11. The award recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to the local community and who serve as role models for compassion and service. Cassidy is a past chair and current board and executive committee member of RECA. He will begin serving as chair of the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce in January 2019.
John Eddie Williams Jr., founder and managing partner of Houston-based Williams Kherkher, recently received the Texas Trial Lawyer Association's Lifetime Achievement Award, according to the TTLA, “in recognition of his career of meaningful and pioneering representation of injured clients, the numerous offices and positions he has held in local, state and national bar, civil justice and trial lawyer organizations, and community service that brings credit to trial lawyers and the legal profession.”
Sean Tracey, founding partner of Tracey Fox in Houston, and his wife, Kari, were honored in November for their support of the William J. Flynn Center for Irish Studies at the University of St. Thomas in Houston. Tracey provides legal representation to personal injury victims.
New Positions
Matthew B. Grunert has joined Bracewell's Houston office as a partner in the firm's employee benefits and executive compensation group. Grunert formerly was a partner in Hunton Andrews Kurth in Houston.
Robert Garner, Jonathan Katz and David Weiss, all Houston-based attorneys, are among 30 new partners in King & Spalding. Garner and Katz represent owners and developers in their construction projects, including power plants and petrochemical facilities. Weiss concentrates his practice on investor-state arbitration and international commercial disputes, among other matters.
Lisa H. Meyerhoff and Myall S. Hawkins have joined the Houston office of Seyfarth Shaw as partners in the firm's litigation department and intellectual property practice. Meyerhoff and Hawkins formerly were members of Baker and McKenzie's international intellectual property team, which Meyerhoff led for that firm's Houston office.
Sean Cichowski and Robert Weitzel are among 21 lawyers promoted to partners in Akerman . Cichowski is based in the firm's Houston office, and Weitzel is in the Dallas office. Both have litigation practices.
KoonsFuller Family Law has promoted five of its attorneys to the position of partner. Neda Garrett and Chris Meuse are new partners in the firm's Plano office. Laura Hayes and Sally Pretorius have become partners in the Dallas office, and Taylor Imel is a new partner in Houston. All are board certified in family law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.
Honor
George E. Bowles, of counsel in the Dallas office of Locke Lord, has been named a Fellow of the American College of Construction Lawyers. Bowles concentrates his practice on complex business-related litigation.
Elected
Megan H Schmid, a Houston associate with Thompson & Knight, has been elected to the board of trustees for the Women's Resource of Greater Houston. Her three-year term began in November. Schmid is in Thompson & Knight's trial practice group.

Driscoll from Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr have stepped in to represent Symbotic Inc., an A.I.-enabled technology platform that focuses on increasing supply chain efficiency, and other defendants in a pending shareholder derivative lawsuit. The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, is 1:24-cv-12522, Austen v. Cohen et al.

Edmund Polubinski and Marie Killmond of Davis Polk & Wardwell have entered appearances for data platform software development company MongoDB and other defendants in a pending shareholder derivative lawsuit. The action, filed Oct. 7 in New York Southern District Court by the Brown Law Firm, accuses the company's directors and/or officers of falsely expressing confidence in the company’s restructuring of its sales incentive plan and downplaying the severity of decreases in its upfront commitments. The case is 1:24-cv-07594, Roy v. Ittycheria et al.

The suit was filed Sept. 7 in Wisconsin Western District Court by Levine Eisberner LLC and Siri & Glimstad on behalf of a project manager who claims that he was wrongfully terminated after applying for a religious exemption to the defendant's COVID-19 vaccine mandate. The case, assigned to U.S. Magistrate Judge Anita Marie Boor, is 3:24-cv-00630, Secker, Nathan v. Epic Systems Corporation.

David X. Sullivan, Thomas J. Finn and Gregory A. Hall from McCarter & English have entered appearances for Sunrun Installation Services in a pending civil rights lawsuit. The complaint was filed Sept. 4 in Connecticut District Court by attorney Robert M. Berke on behalf of former employee George Edward Steins, who was arrested and charged with employing an unregistered home improvement salesperson. The complaint alleges that had Sunrun informed the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection that the plaintiff's employment had ended in 2017 and that he no longer held Sunrun's home improvement contractor license, he would not have been hit with charges, which were dismissed in May 2024. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer, is 3:24-cv-01423, Steins v. Sunrun, Inc. et al.
