Scott Field, a former Texas appeals court judge in Austin, has joined Butler Snow's Austin office, adding to its commercial litigation and appellate practices.

Field, who served on the Third Court of Appeals for six years but lost a re-election bid last November, said he is excited to get back into the courtroom, and to help his new firm expand its trial and appellate power in Texas.

“Scott is manna from heaven,” said Danny Van Horn, a partner in Memphis who chairs the firm's litigation department.

“He has the chops to impress our largest blue-chip clients in terms of handling nationwide large motions practice and appellate work. Our appellate lawyers are embedded in our trial teams to make sure those issues are thought out all the way,” he said, adding that Field also can do first-chair trial work.

Field said that after the election he considered offers from several firms, a couple of state agencies, and from the Texas Office of the Attorney General, but ultimately decided Butler Snow was the “right platform.”

In addition to handling trial work and appeals, Field said he expects to argue motions in the courtroom and spend time in the trial courts watching for appellate issues. He joined the firm on Feb. 11.

Before serving on the appeals court, Field was in private practice at York, Keller & Field, and the Field Law Firm.

Butler Snow has eight lawyers in Austin and two in Dallas. Five other litigators recently joined the firm in Austin.
