Haynes and Boone Opens Charlotte Office, Adding Partner from King & Spalding
The firm is aiming to better serve its banking clients, including Bank of America and Wells Fargo.

In an effort to better serve its banking clients, Haynes and Boone has opened an office in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The new office opened Monday, initially staffed by finance partner Justin Riess, who just joined the firm from King & Spalding, as well as partners Todd Cubbage and C. Kyle Musgrove, who transferred from other Haynes and Boone offices.
Riess, who was a partner in the corporate, finance and investments practice group at King & Spalding and chair of the franchise and hospitality industry group, will split his time between Charlotte and New York to support the firm's corporate and finance practice.
Cubbage is a finance lawyer who came from Dallas, while Musgrove does intellectual property litigation and appeals and had been based in Washington, D.C.
Haynes and Boone managing partner Tim Powers said in a press release that the finance practice is a cornerstone of the firm. Charlotte is the firm's 17th office and a major finance and banking center.
“Charlotte has been on our long-term road map for some time, and Justin is the perfect person to help us enter this new market,” Powers said.
In an interview in February about Haynes and Boone's record-setting 2018 financials, Powers said the firm would soon announce the opening of an office in Charlotte to serve two of its top 10 clients—Bank of America and Wells Fargo.
Riess said Haynes and Boone is a good fit for his practice because the firm is well-known in the finance arena and also has a franchise practice. He said he is excited to help build the Charlotte office.
Riess does leveraged finance, specialty finance, private equity finance and syndicated lending for clients in the franchise industry along with companies in the defense and aerospace, financial services and industrial growth sectors.
He declined to identify clients, but confirmed that he has done work for Haynes and Boone clients Bank of America and Wells Fargo, and many other banks. According to the firm, Haynes and Boone also does work for Citibank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. and Morgan Stanley.
Riess was at King & Spalding for a little more than eight years, and prior to that, practiced at Charlotte firm Moore & Van Allen.
Asked for comment on Riess' departure, King & Spalding said in a statement: “We appreciate Justin's contributions to the firm and wish him continued success.”

J. Brugh Lower of Gibbons has entered an appearance for industrial equipment supplier Devco Corporation in a pending trademark infringement lawsuit. The suit, accusing the defendant of selling knock-off Graco products, was filed Dec. 18 in New Jersey District Court by Rivkin Radler on behalf of Graco Inc. and Graco Minnesota.
