Reed Smith, which launched an office in Dallas this month with 16 lawyers from three firms, has now added energy partner Jorge Gutierrez from Norton Rose Fulbright.
Gutierrez, who joined Reed Smith's energy and natural resources practice last Friday, said he was lured by the reputation of Reed Smith lawyers and the prospect of helping the firm build its Dallas office and its energy practice.
Additionally, Gutierrez said, he worked with Reed Smith Houston partner Peggy Heeg when they both practiced at his former firm.
“The firm's commitment to take what was a really good, market-leading energy and natural resources practice group and expand into the Texas market was really attractive to me,” he said. “It was just too compelling an opportunity to pass up.”
Gutierrez said he works in the upstream and midstream sectors on M&A and asset acquisitions and divestitures, as well as commercial contracts. He declined to identify his clients, but said they will benefit because Reed Smith is committed to the oil and gas practice both on the transactional and regulatory sides.
Bobby Majumder, co-managing partner of Reed Smith's Dallas office, said in a statement that the firm is committed to hiring the best transactional and litigation attorneys in the market, and Gutierrez fits that criteria.
“Jorge is a top-flight lawyer who has built a stellar reputation locally and throughout Texas for guiding clients through complex energy transactional matters. We look forward to introducing him to Reed Smith clients across our global network,” Majumder wrote.
Reed Smith has added other lawyers in Houston recently who serve clients in the energy industry, including Kirsten Polyansky, a commodities partner who came from Haynes and Boone along with counsel Jessica Cortez; and counsel Mariano Ornelas Lopez, the former legal director of CENAGAS, the Mexican government entity that manages the country's natural gas transportation and storage network.
Noting that the firm has about 1,100 energy partners around the world, Daryl Lansdale, U.S. managing partner for Norton Rose Fulbright, wrote in an email that the firm wishes Gutierrez well in his future endeavors.
