Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld added to its already formidable 200-lawyer energy practice Thursday with the addition of former McGuireWoods partner Matthew Kapinos to its Houston office.
Kapinos was the deputy head of McGuireWood's energy team before his departure and is recognized as a leader in the areas of project development, acquisitions, divestitures and strategic joint ventures encompassing a range of energy assets, the firm said.
Kapinos said he was excited to join Akin Gump's “well-rounded energy practice,” noting the firm has clients both in the traditional Texas oil-and-gas arena as well as in renewable energy.
He also made a point to highlight Akin Gump's international presence, citing the benefits of being able to work with clients in, say, London or Singapore.
“Houston is the energy capital of the world,” Kapinos said. “Not just for American companies, but international companies feel they have to be here as well,” he said.
“With significant experience in energy infrastructure matters as well as broader projects work, Matt further solidifies our standing as a go-to firm in the traditional and renewable power sectors,” Akin Gump chairman Kim Koopersmith said in a statement.
Akin Gump's energy practice is the firm's sixth largest by head count, with over 200 attorneys, according to ALM data.
“Matt's experience with [engineering, procurement and construction] matters as well as renewables, where traditional energy companies are increasingly seeking to expand their presence, will be a key differentiator for us,” said Christine LaFollette, partner in charge of Akin Gump's Houston office, in a statement.
Kapinos was at McGuireWoods for the previous 11 years. Before that he served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Army from 2001 to 2006 and was deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
