Four medical malpractice litigators from Hiersche Hayward Drakeley & Urbach, which will close on Dec. 31, will move to 34-lawyer Mayer LLP in Dallas on Jan. 1, the same day nine other lawyers join Spencer Fane in Plano.
Mayer LLP partner Zach Mayer said the four laterals will establish a medical malpractice and health care practice at the firm, which he formed in January along with 21 others who came from Kane Russell Coleman Logan.
William "Dick" Wiles, M. Kenneth Patterson, Kevin Keith and Heather Kanny will join Mayer LLP as partners, Mayer said.
On Nov. 13, Hiersche Hayward announced it would close at the end of the year as Midwest firm Spencer Fane announced its plans to expand its Plano office by adding the group of nine from Hiersche Hayward's litigation and business practices.
At that time, Kanny said she and the three others in the medical malpractice section were in talks with a number of firms.
In an interview on Thursday, Kanny said they were drawn to Mayer LLP's entrepreneurial culture and its energetic approach to the practice of law. It's a "natural fit" for their team, she said.
Patterson said in an interview on Thursday that Mayer LLP provides his group the best opportunity to remain together as a "well-functioning unit" and avoid client conflicts. He said their practice is focused on the defense of physicians and hospitals in litigation and providing administrative law assistance.
"The four of us just kind of gel," he said.
Patterson said the group's clients include insurers The Doctor's Co., ProAssurance and Texas Medical Liability Trust, and Shannon Medical Center in San Angelo.
He noted that Victoria Yarkho, a former Hiersche Hayward lawyer who joined Mayer LLP in February, spoke highly of the firm. She actually urged Mayer to speak with her former colleagues about a potential lateral move, Mayer said.
Mayer said the deal for the lawyers to join his firm came together within a relatively short two weeks.
The law firm leader said Wiles and Patterson are "just exceptional trial lawyers" who have collectively tried hundreds of cases together, while Kanny adds peer review and consulting expertise.
Also, he noted, Keith will head Mayer LLP's appellate group.
Mayer LLP has 25 lawyers in Dallas, seven in Houston and two in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
