Like numerous others in Big Law, Shearman & Sterling is continuing a march across Texas, growing its footprint there with a new location. The firm officially opened a Dallas office on Monday, starting with six partners and plans to grow.

Anchoring the new location are former Jones Day partners Scott Cohen and Robert Cardone and three Shearman lawyers who transferred from the firm's Houston office—restructuring partners Luckey McDowell and Ian Roberts and tax partner Ryan Bray. Another Jones Day M&A partner, Alain Dermarkar, will join the new office "shortly," Shearman announced in a press release.

Speculation about Shearman opening in Dallas has swirled since the firm hired Roberts last June, because he had been working in Dallas as a special counsel at Baker Botts. McDowell is also a former Baker Botts lawyer.

Senior tax associate Julia Pashin, who joined Shearman last fall, according to her LinkedIn profile, is also working in the new Dallas office.

The firm expects to add more associates to the new location.

Texas Lawyer reported Feb. 6 that Shearman planned to open a Dallas office by bringing on an M&A group from Jones Day.

Shearman moved into Texas in March 2018, when it added a group of Austin lawyers from Andrews Kurth Kenyon, which soon afterward merged with Hunton & Williams. Two months later, Shearman launched in Houston with lawyers from Baker Botts, Thompson & Knight and Jones Day.

In a press release Monday, David Beveridge, a senior partner at Shearman, said the Dallas expansion is an "exciting next step" in the firm's growth strategy, which will strengthen the firm's transactional teams in New York, the Bay Area and globally.
