The bench where he's presided since 2009 will be Judge Chris Duggan's once again.

Duggan, judge of Bastrop County's 423rd District Court, did not draw an opponent in either the Democratic Primary in March, or the general election in November. That means he's effectively won reelection and will begin a new term in 2021.

This election season, Texas Lawyer will be publishing Q&As with candidates for district and appellate court benches in the Lone Star State. Duggan completed Texas Lawyer's judicial questionnaire. Here are his answers, edited for length and news style, so you can meet the judge.

What is a brief biography of work experience, educational qualifications and career honors that you want voters to know about?

Briefing attorney at the Eastland Court of Appeals 1989-1990; assistant county attorney of Travis County 1990-1994; assistant district attorney of Travis County 1995-2008; district judge of the 423rd District Court, Bastrop County 2009-present; undergraduate degree from the University of Texas in 1986 and JD from Texas Tech University School of Law in 1989.

Why do you want this position?

I have been a district judge for three terms, and I want to continue to do it. It is such an incredible honor to be a district judge. I truly love the challenge of it.

In your view, what is the proper role that a judge should play in the courtroom?

A fair and impartial person who bases their rulings on the facts and the law. A judge should never let anything else influence any decision.

How would you go about managing this court's docket efficiently and effectively?

I actively listen to other judges, our local bar association and other folks at the courthouse for suggestions on how to run a docket. I'm a firm believer that good ideas come from lots of sources.
