The Texas Board of Law Examiners has released the pass list for the February 2020 bar examination, but because of the coronavirus, most of the successful text-takers will be sworn in over video conference instead of the traditional event in Austin.

In a tweet on Friday congratulating the individuals who passed the bar exam, Texas Supreme Court Justice Brett Busby said he will make himself available next week to swear in the newly licensed Texas lawyers using video.

"It's a way to take the oath safely during this pandemic," Busby, the court's liaison to the board, said in an interview on Friday.

The Texas Supreme Court and the State Bar of Texas traditionally hold a swearing-in ceremony in Austin in May, but that will not happen this year because of stay-at-home orders and social distancing guidelines currently in place to stem the spread of the coronavirus.

Depending on the numbers of people, Busby said he may hold more than one swearing-in video conference, but the justice noted that the successful test-takers have many options. Judges and retired judges are among those  who can swear in the new Texas lawyers.

Busby said Texas statutes have allowed swearing in by video conference or teleconference for a while, but he does not think that option was commonly used.

"This will be my first time," Busby said about his plans for video conferences.

Law school pass rates will be posted shortly.
