Texas trial lawyer Stephen Susman, 79, founder of Susman Godfrey, was injured in a cycling accident in Houston on April 22 and remains hospitalized in Houston.

Susman, an avid cyclist, was riding in the Old Braeswood area of Houston on the morning of April 22, when his tire hit a crack in the road and he was thrown from the bike, said Neal Manne, a managing partner of Susman Godfrey.

"In a freak accident, his front tire went into one of those seams [in the road] and locked. His momentum threw him over the bike. He had a good helmet on, but the way he landed, he hit his head very hard," Manne said Wednesday.

Susman remains unconscious at the Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center, Manne said. Because of COVID-19 restrictions at the hospital, Susman's wife and children are not permitted to visit him.

"It's totally wait and see," Manne said about Susman's condition.

Susman splits his time between the law firm's Houston and New York offices.

Susman has participated in the MS 150 bike ride fundraiser in Texas seven times, according to Manne, and he was the top fundraiser several times, which entitled him to wear the No. 1 jersey on those occasions.

He rode in 2019 and had planned to ride again this year, until the May 2-3 event was canceled because off the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Steve is 79 years old, and obviously remained vigorous and active until last week's accident," Manne said.
