The Trump campaign has launched "Lawyers for Trump," a coalition to "mobilize support" for President Donald Trump's reelection campaign that is chaired by a group including Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge.
The other co-chairs are Harmeet Dhillon of Dhillon Law Group in San Francisco, and former Deputy White House Counsel Stefan Passantino, now a partner at Michael Best in Washington, D.C.
The announcement on Thursday from the president's reelection campaign listed the names of 27 lawyers, including the attorneys general in Alaska, Mississippi, Montana, Louisiana, Alabama, South Dakota and Missouri, former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, former U.S. Attorney General Ed Meese and former New York City mayor and Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani.
The names and photos of the advisory board are displayed on the Lawyers for Trump website.
Dhillon, a civil rights attorney, said she is actively engaged in the campaign on several levels, noting that she is also a co-chairwoman of Women for Trump, and is a media surrogate for the campaign. She said she is also a member of the Republican National Committee and a co-chairwoman of the Republican National Lawyers Association executive committee.
"It's a volunteer role," Dhillon said of her Lawyers for Trump position. She said she and other lawyers would be available to assist with election integrity litigation.
Rutledge said the plan is to have lawyers in place in every state, including at precinct and local levels, to ensure that if there are "unfortunate incidents of voter fraud activity at the polls," teams of lawyers would be in place to react immediately to ensure every American has the right to vote.
The other co-chairs—Paxton and Passantino—were not immediately available for comment.
In the announcement for Lawyers for Trump, Justin Clark, a Trump 2020 deputy campaign manager, wrote that the advisory group is "committed to rallying support to help make another four years of President Trump's leadership a reality."
Clark wrote that Democrat Joe Biden's "embrace of the far left's mission to undermine the law of the land" proves he is unfit for the presidency, while Trump will "continue to fight for the preservation of America's freedoms and founding principles."
Paxton's involvement drew speedy criticism from the Texas Democratic Party, which issued a statement noting that Paxton faces criminal securities fraud charges, has led several lawsuits that would "strip" health care from millions of Texans, and opposes vote-by-mail policies in Texas for those afraid to go to the polls during a pandemic.
"It is no surprise that Trump rewards him with this appointment. After all, indicted Ken Paxton followed Donald Trump's lead to steal healthcare and voting rights from millions of Texans. Crooks of a feather flock together," the party wrote in the statement.
Paxton was indicted in 2015 on felony securities fraud charges. He has pleaded not guilty, and the case is pending.
Texas may be a swing state in the November election, as a Quinnipiac University poll released on Wednesday shows Biden with a one-point led over Trump in Texas.
With that, a Texan also leads a lawyer group in support of Biden's campaign. Dallas trial lawyer Marc Stanley said in late June that he has recruited thousands of lawyers from throughout the country to donate time and to volunteer legal services to Biden's campaign for president. Stanley, founder and principal in The Stanley Law Group, is chairman of "Lawyers for Biden."
