Houston appellate litigator Terry Adams was sworn in to the First Court of Appeals on Friday morning after Gov. Greg Abbott on Thursday appointed him to the vacant bench.
On Thursday, Abbott appointed two more Republican judicial candidates to the vacant benches they'd been eyeing. Like Adams, both Steve Duskie and Vince Santini recently won their party's nomination in the July runoff election.
Adams earned the Republican nomination for the seat in the July 14 runoff election but still faces Democratic opponent Amparo Monique Guerra in November's general election. Adams, a Houston appellate law solo practitioner, won his party's nomination to the First Court after winning 69% of the runoff vote in July.
"I am truly honored to be appointed by Gov. Abbott," Adams wrote in an email. "After being an appellate attorney for over 30 years, I am very excited to serve on the First Court of Appeals now and for many years after the November election."
Santini will have to battle Democratic Opponent Marc M. Meyer in November in order to keep his appointment to Montgomery County's 457th District Court, a newly created court. Santini, senior litigation attorney for The Voss Law Firm in Conroe, won the Republican nomination after earning 78% of the vote in the runoff.
"I am working hard to swiftly get the 457th up and running and to start moving the docket," Santini wrote in an email. "I am humbled to enter the general election as the incumbent judge and am eager to make Montgomery County proud, and to rally this momentum for a victory over my Democratic opponent in November."
Duskie, who was appointed to Bell County's 426th District Court, does not have an opponent in the general election, which means he will get to keep the seat from now until the end of his four-year term in 2023. He won the bench when he got 60% of the vote in the Republican primary runoff. Duskie is partner in Lindley, Wiley & Duskie in Killeen.
