Members of the State Bar of Texas may soon decide if law firms can use trade names in Texas, an increasingly hot-button issue in the Lone Star State as most states have loosened restrictions against trade names.

On Friday, the State Bar of Texas board of directors is set to vote on an item to ask the Supreme Court of Texas to order a referendum on proposed changes to the Texas Disciplinary Rules of Professional Conduct. Those changes include a revised Rule VII that would permit a lawyer to practice law under a trade name as long as it is not false or misleading.
