A closely watched oil and gas case, Hess v. Schlumberger, ended in a loss for the plaintiff when U.S. District Judge Sim Lake ruled that Hess is not entitled to any damages—which could have exceeded $300 million—from Schlumberger after filing a lawsuit over safety valves used in deepwater oil wells in the Gulf of Mexico.

Lake issued the judgement Nov.  5 after deciding the valves failed because Hess operated them improperly, not because the parts were substandard when Schlumberger delivered them in 2012.
