Anyone who has hired employees knows the pitfalls of completing the I-9 Form. As an immigration attorney in Houston, Texas, one of the main issues that I see my corporate clients experiencing are problems with the Form I-9. Also known as the Employment Eligibility Verification Form, the Form I-9 must be completed within three days of making a new hire to verify U.S. work authorization. The process requires both the employer and each new employee to accurately complete the form. Moreover, the employer must review original documents confirming work eligibility for every new hire. Companies are also required to keep all original signed I-9 forms on file for each employee and maintain original I-9 forms for all current employees for inspection.
