Beaumont trial lawyer Walter Umphrey, the founder of Provost Umphrey Law Firm who led the team of five trial lawyers that negotiated a $17.3 billion settlement for Texas with tobacco companies in 1998, died Tuesday at age 85.

Umphrey died in Beaumont of natural causes, the firm reported in a press release.
