Overall, young drivers accounted for 10% of Americans killed in auto crashed since 2010, according to the review of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data. In total there were some 320,400 fatal crashes during the period. Slightly more than 60% of the fatalities happened to a teenager behind the wheel, while 38% of the deaths were attributed to young passengers. However, teens were among the demographics least likely to be killed as the result of a fatal car crash. Those younger than 15 years old were the least likely to be killed in fatal car accidents, while people age 25-34 were the most likely to be a fatality and accounted for 19% of auto accident deaths since 2010. Andrew Hurst, insurance data analyst at ValuePenguin.com, said in a release: "These findings underscore the importance of educating teens and young drivers about safe driving. In addition to safety, young drivers face steep financial penalties for unsafe driving. In addition to costly repairs, an 18-year-old driver's car insurance rates will increase by an average of 253% after an accident."
