The U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals rejected a defense attorney’s plea to reverse a denial of dismissal for three Jasper police officers facing wrongful death claims over a man who died in custody.

The violation of civil rights case brought by Frances Earline Sims, mother of Steven Qualls, alleges the City of Jasper officers—Sgt. Toderick Griffin, Sterling R. Linebaugh and Heather Rene O’Dell—knew her son was in dire need of medical care, and were willfully indifferent to his suffering.
