It is no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated the already-critical staffing shortages that have plagued the American health care system for years.

The Scope of the Problem Is Huge

The American Hospital Association (AHA) has published survey data showing that vacancies for nursing positions increased by 30% between 2019 and 2020. The AHA predicts, “America will face a shortage of up to 124,000 physicians by 2033 and will need to hire at least 200,000 nurses per year to meet demand,” with historically marginalized rural and urban communities most affected by the lack of qualified health care personnel, according to its May 2021 fact sheet, Strengthening Health Care Workforce.
