Michael Mery, judge for the 144th District Court and the Democratic Party pick, will have to beat a former judge that presided in that court for four years if he wants to stay on the bench.

This Bexar County race is not a rematch, however. The Republican challenger, Lorina Rummel, lost the seat in 2018 after one term to Ray Olivarri. But Judge Olivarri died soon after of cancer, and a special election was held in 2020 in which Mery handily defeated then Republican candidate Joseph Appelt with 58.6% of the vote.
