A Houston jury—which found companies owned by state Rep. Gary Gates negligent—awarded $3.5 million to the survivors of a murdered Honduran immigrant.

Jurors in a Harris County 129th District Court trial that ended Wednesday found Gatesco Inc. and APTMC LLC, doing business as Magnolia Cover Apartments, negligent on premises liability and wrongful death claims, according to the charge of the court.
