The U.S. Supreme Court next term will examine the lengthy sentences of Dallas area bank robbers known as the “Scarecrow Bandits,” considering whether they are eligible for the sentencing relief provisions of the federal First Step Act after earlier sentences had been thrown out.

The court granted certiorari, or review, Tuesday in Hewitt v. U.S. and Duffey v. U.S., involving the convicted bank robbers’ fight for reduced sentences under the landmark 2018 criminal justice reform law. The high court will decide whether a defendant convicted and sentenced before the First Step Act, but then resentenced after the criminal justice reform law went into effect, is eligible for its sentencing relief provisions.
