It’s summertime, and people are thinking about vacations, light reading by the pool or beach—anything but weighty, serious matters. I’m no different. Why write about big cases or complex legal doctrines when the legal world gives us so much weird and wonderful tidbits to think about?

For example, take the unfortunately-named Crystal Methvin. In 2018, the St. Augustine, Florida woman was arrested for—you guessed it—possession of crystal meth. I’m sure the arresting officers and the folks at central booking did doubletakes when they saw her name. Or for that matter, consider the ironic fate of the St. Cloud, Minnesota-based Lifeback Law Firm. In May 2024, the law firm (which had eight offices across the state) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. What, you might ask, did the bankrupt law firm specialize in? Why, bankruptcy, of course! At least now they’ve got “hands on” experience.
