A Good Deal
After almost 25 years at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld in San Antonio, Cecil Schenker joined Cox Smith Matthews as a shareholder on July 1. “Change is good,” says Schenker. He adds that the nature of his practice – focusing on mid-market, emerging and entrepreneurial businesses – is “a better fit” with a regional firm. Headquartered in San Antonio, Cox Smith is a commercial law firm that also has offices in Austin, Dallas and McAllen. “I’m a deal lawyer,” Schenker says, noting that he handles all sorts of business transactions for clients. Schenker says he started his own firm, Schenker, Rosenheim & Schenker, in San Antonio in 1966 and merged the firm with Akin Gump in 1984. In 1997, Schenker opened Akin Gump’s Los Angeles office. Schenker was a partner in Akin Gump and a member of its firmwide management committee. James B. “Jamie” Smith Jr., Cox Smith’s managing director, says his firm is excited to have Schenker among the ranks of its approximately 130 lawyers. “He’s got a great reputation as a business lawyer, not only regionally but nationwide,” Smith says of Schenker. Smith says Schenker, who has joined Cox Smith’s corporate and securities practice group, has many clients in Dallas. “That will enhance our transactional practice there,” Smith says. Schenker says he will be based in San Antonio but will spend time in the Dallas office as well.
