The family of a man killed by an Austin police officer received a $1.5 million settlement from the city on Nov. 7. Kevin Brown’s parents claimed their son was outside an after-hours club in June 2007 when he was approached by police officer Michael Olsen. Brown, a 25-year-old father of a young son, ran from the officer, and Olsen fatally shot him twice in the back. Olsen subsequently was fired from the police force. Brown’s parents argued the officer used excessive force, claiming their son was unarmed and did not pose a threat to the officer or others around them. In addition, they said, the city failed to fire Olsen after he was indicted for perjury after lying about a separate excessive force claim in 2002. The defense argued Olsen had reason to suspect Brown had a weapon when he shot him.
