The annual party was in full swing at the Really Huge Multinational Law Firm’s downtown headquarters. In spite of the financial crisis of 2008, it had been a great year, and most of the lawyers were flush with big bonus checks. A DJ played to his demographic, which meant ’70s disco and ’80s synth-pop. Bartenders served at the open bar, and caterers staffed huge buffets in the conference rooms.
The managing partner worked the crowd. “Congratulations, great year. Thanks for your hard work,” she said over and over, shaking hands and smiling her way from one end of the lobby to the other.
