In firms’ searches for qualified legal secretaries, too many focus on the trees at the expense of the forest. Their job listings specify narrow, marginally relevant criteria that are unlikely to turn up the kinds of people they want to hire.

One of my favorite non sequiturs is “must know Word styles.” It only takes a few days’ training for a bright, engaged student to acquire such skills. On the other hand, past experience is no substitute for training; a lot of secretaries with “experience” never have been properly trained and make no effort to correctly use Word or WordPerfect.
