State Rep. Pete Gallego, D-Alpine, points to his background as a prosecutor as a reason he has felt compelled to make a difference in the area of criminal justice. But it is also a result of learning about Texans who have been serving time in prison for crimes they did not commit. “We have such an issue in Texas with criminal convictions,” he says. “I wanted to have some say in making our system better so all Texans could believe in our system again.”
