On Nov. 16, her first day back as a full-time employee at the Galveston federal courthouse, Cathy McBroom attended a meet-and-greet with U.S. District Judge Kenneth Hoyt of Houston and 25 members of the Galveston County Bar Association.

After the formalities of the meeting were over, some of the lawyers asked Hoyt — who took over the Galveston Division’s part-time docket earlier this year — if a permanent U.S. district judge will ever sit in Galveston again. That’s when McBroom wondered if the attorneys knew who she was — knew she was “that Cathy.”
