Three of the four federal district courts in Texas collectively have requested as many as 10 new judges in a biennial survey conducted by the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts (AOUSC). Two of the courts cite spiraling criminal caseloads, particularly in divisions along the state’s border with Mexico, as one reason for their requests.
U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel of Austin says the Western District requested four or five additional judges in the survey, which had a March 5 deadline for responses from the nation’s 94 federal districts.
