After a woman reported to Mineola police in 2005 that two of her foster children claimed they had to do “nasty stuff” at a local club, the Wood County District Attorney’s Office determined there was no case. But the Smith County DA’s office, determining that some alleged acts of child sex abuse occurred in its jurisdiction, sought indictments and won convictions against three people now serving life sentences.
A jury convicted Jamie Pittman, the first defendant to go to trial, of aggravated sexual assault of a child; Shauntel Mayo, the second defendant to go to trial, was convicted of two counts of sexual performance by a child and one count of engaging in organized criminal activity; and third defendant Patrick Kelly was convicted of organized criminal activity stemming from allegations that he “groomed” children for sexual performances from which he profited.
