As a kid growing up in Long Island, N.Y., Ernie White had seen little of the world. When he graduated from high school he wanted to see as much of it as he could. So White went on a world tour the old-fashioned way: He enlisted in the U.S. Navy.
“I’d never been west of West Virginia. And I got the opportunity to be stationed in San Diego,” White says of his service.
