The managing partner — sometimes assisted by other attorneys — and a cadre of non-lawyer administrative professionals direct the business aspects of the firm. These people must understand the management and economic view of the entire firm, often as the operating arms of a management or executive committee or managing partner(s).
It has been my experience that, in some firms, the managing partner does not always have the full authority of the title. Often, the managing partner is countermanded by more senior partners or by committees. Valuable support may be withheld by many of the professionals and sometimes by secretaries or other administrative personnel of long service.
