After six years tracking diversity at large Dallas firms and no appreciable progress increasing minority representation among lawyers, Gerald “Jerry” Roberts, chairman of the Dallas Diversity Task Force (DDTF), says, “We may need to have a broader discussion. . . . We thank the firms for their participation, but we are not encouraged by the data.”
On Dec. 12, the DDTF — a coalition of the Dallas Asian American Bar Association, the Dallas Hispanic Bar Association and the J.L. Turner Legal Association, which represents African-American attorneys — released its latest survey titled “Law Firm Diversity Report Dallas – 2011.” The survey shows the number of minority lawyers at the 20 largest Dallas firms has risen only incrementally from 8.4 percent in 2006 to 11.48 percent in 2011. In 2011, that 11.48 percent included 4.02 percent Hispanics; 3.18 percent African-Americans; 3.39 percent Asian-Americans; and .89 percent Native Americans. With the exception of Native Americans, the percentage of minorities at the large Dallas firms fell below the percentage of minorities among the general Texas population and among members of the State Bar of Texas.
