When Judge Alfonso Charles told his father he wanted to be a lawyer, his dad was not thrilled with the idea. Lawyers and politicians always had been the butts of jokes for the family, he says.

“Here I am now, having to play both roles,” says a laughing Charles, now judge of the 124th District Court in Longview. But he says his parents ended up being very supportive of his career choice.
