The Senate Criminal Justice Committee on March 12 heard testimony and made changes to a bill that would require counties to set maximum caseloads for indigent-defense lawyers. But some senators asked pointed questions about the bill, and the committee didn’t send the revised version to the full Senate.

"In principle, I’m opposed to telling the judge or telling the lawyer how many cases they can take, because I don’t think we should be in that business," said Sen. Joan Huffman, R-Southside Place.
